The U.S. Army has awarded GE Aviation a two-year contract to design its GE3000 engine to retool nearly 3,000 Apache and Blackhawk helicopters.

While the amount of the contract for the Improved Turbine Engine Program was not disclosed, the federal investment is expected to support more than 100 engineers, primarily at GE in Lynn.

Designing, manufacturing, and supporting T700 engines for the Army’s Black Hawk and Apache helicopters has been a major part of GE Lynn’s business for decades.

BURLINGTON - Burlington firefighters are about to get some backup after receiving a federal grant.

The Burlington Fire Department recently announced it was awarded a federal Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The exact funds received are $578,112. This will allow the department to bring four new firefighters onto the team.

In an act of unity, area mayors, as well as many of the state’s national representation, came out in support of Attorney General Maura Healey’s efforts to enforce the state’s assault weapon ban, specifically targeting the sale of copies of these guns.

Despite pushback against Healey and concerns — an online petition against Healey’s action gathered more than 28,000 signatures, while Gov. Charlie Baker said the measure needed clarification — multiple local and state officials said they support the measure, announced July 20.

Congressman Seth Moulton announced Wednesday the establishment of a service award in memory of the late Rev. Peter J. Gomes, a Harvard University preacher and professor. The award will be given each year to someone in the Sixth District ‘who best epitomizes the qualities of integrity, compassion, and commitment to community that were the foundation of the late Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes’ teachings,’ according to a description of the award on Moulton's website.
