Eagle-Tribune: Mayors Stand with Healey on Assault Weapons Ban

In an act of unity, area mayors, as well as many of the state’s national representation, came out in support of Attorney General Maura Healey’s efforts to enforce the state’s assault weapon ban, specifically targeting the sale of copies of these guns.

Despite pushback against Healey and concerns — an online petition against Healey’s action gathered more than 28,000 signatures, while Gov. Charlie Baker said the measure needed clarification — multiple local and state officials said they support the measure, announced July 20.

By definition, a gun is considered a copy “if its internal functional components are substantially similar in construction and configuration” to those that are banned. Around 10,000 of these guns were sold in the state last year, according to Healey’s office.

Locally, Mayor Daniel Rivera, Newburyport Mayor Donna Holaday, Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt, and Congressman Seth Moulton support Healey’s efforts.

“I know firsthand how deadly assault weapons are, and I wholeheartedly support Attorney General Maura Healey’s enforcement of our state assault weapons ban,” Moulton said in a statement, referencing his time as a Marine.

Moulton, who has been a long supporter of gun control measures and has held the U.S. House of Representatives floor to make a statement about it, said Healey is simply enforcing a law that has been around for almost two decades.

“As Attorney General, she has that authority and responsibility,” he said. “I’m proud to stand with her as she courageously does her job to keep us safe.”
