Afghan evacuees who narrowly escaped their native country as the Taliban seized control amid withdrawal of U.S. forces are now facing a new crisis on American soil where they are finding they are eligible for government benefits traditionally afforded to refugees.

SALEM (CBS) – A former Afghan interpreter and U.S. soldier says his family is safe and out of Afghanistan, crediting Rep. Seth Moulton for their rescue. 

Said Noor is breathing much easier now that his family has been evacuated from Afghanistan safely. “The burden is off my shoulders you know I feel so much relief,” Noor explained.His brother sent him a selfie from the airport. 

“He is like I keep pinching myself,” Noor said. “I keep thinking I’m dreaming.”

In the dark of night, Said Noor’s family members left their homes in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Friday, headed for a gas station where they would be picked up and brought to Hamid Karzai International Airport.

They met with a Marine and other families who were escaping and gave him the predetermined code words: “Tom Brady.”

The Marines and other service members who died at Abbey Gate on Thursday "were heroes in the truest sense of the word," Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) told Axios, based on what he saw them doing just two days earlier.

What they're saying: "I expected to see a gate with Marines on one side and Afghans on the other," Moulton said Friday. "That wasn't the case. The Marines had to go out, amidst the Afghans, with the Taliban yards away with their horse whips. ... I've never been more proud to be an American."

WASHINGTON — Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) issued the following statement on Afghanistan: 

To say that today is anything short of a disaster would be dishonest. Worse, it was avoidable. The time to debate whether we stay in Afghanistan has passed, but there is still time to debate how we manage our retreat. For months, I have been calling on the Administration to evacuate our allies immediately—not to wait for paperwork, for shaky agreements with third countries, or for time to make it look more “orderly.”
