Washington, D.C — In 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G.I. Bill into law. In theory, the G.I. Bill represented a promise from the country to the people who fought on its behalf that their sacrifice would be rewarded with the opportunity to attend college and build generational wealth. In practice, generations of Black veterans of World War II and their descendants were robbed of this promise because of Jim Crow and the wide racial disparity in the bill’s implementation.
The benefits of the G.I. Bill, often thought of as the path to the middle class for millions of WWII veterans, were largely denied to Black veterans. U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Salem, hopes to change that with a new bill.
“Many Black veterans were … denied benefits, denied homes, denied the generational wealth that comes from going to college,” Moulton, a veteran and the author of the bill, said in a statement. “We can never fully repay those American heroes. But we can fix this going forward for their families.”
In honor of Veterans Day, a group of Democratic lawmakers is reviving an effort to pay the families of Black service members who fought on behalf of the nation during World War II for benefits they were denied or prevented from taking full advantage of when they returned home from war.

Through the tragedy of his own life, Senator Cleland saved the lives of others. And he reminded us, in the words of Martin Luther King, that ‘everybody can be great because everybody can serve.’
