WASHINGTON — House Republicans, faced with a firestorm of public anger and presidential disapproval, abandoned a just-approved amendment Tuesday that would have gutted the independent House Office of Congressional Ethics.

The swift reversal, which came less than 24 hours after the proposed changes were announced, highlights the current degree of discord in Washington.

Congressman Seth Moulton is no longer a freshman member of Congress.

The Salem Democrat was sworn in for his second term Tuesday, nearly two months after 6th District voters reelected him -- uncontested - in the Nov. 8 election to represent them in the 115th Congress.

"Serving the Sixth District is one of the great honors of my life," said Moulton in a statement Tuesday evening. "Our region has so much to offer, and our state is a leader in finding innovative solutions to national challenges."

(CNN) Democrats on the Hill -- including Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts -- are speaking out against Republicans' push to limit the powers of a watchdog panel that polices the ethics of Congress, saying it's "absolutely ridiculous."

"They completely blindsided us. It's absolutely ridiculous," Moulton told CNN's Alisyn Camerota Tuesday on "New Day." "Is there any American out there who thinks Congress is too ethical?"

SALEM — Soon-to-be sophomore Sixth District Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Salem, is not a person who likes to sit still for too long.

That’s not only because he has a standing desk in his Washington, D.C. office.

It is, he says, because he and his staff are working hard to represent the district no matter what political party his constituents belong to, even if they don’t belong to a party or did not vote.

On Friday, President Barack Obama signed a bipartisan bill, Faster Care for Veterans Act, sponsored by Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Salem that aims at cutting down on veterans' wait times to get in front of medical doctors.

It is the first piece of legislation authored by Moulton to become law. The president's signature came less than two weeks after complementary bills in both chambers of Congress passed. The bill most recently passed in the Senate by unanimous vote on Saturday.

ESSEX — It’s just a bill on Capitol Hill, but President Obama’s signature would be a panacea for boaters who travel the Essex River.

If the president signs it, the Water Resource Development Act of 2016 (WRDA) would allow dredging in the Essex River for the first time since 1992 because of a provision pushed by Congressman Seth Moulton of Salem. The project calls for the town to dredge the upper part of the river as it approaches the downtown Causeway, allowing for the safe passage of watercraft.

GLOUCESTER — U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton was well into his town meeting Monday with an overflow crowd of Cape Ann constituents when a military veteran in the audience described his own experiences with the Veterans Administration health system as largely positive.

After thanking the man both for his service and his question, Moulton conceded that his own experience with the VA system — as a Marine Corps veteran who served four tours in Iraq — fell more accurately within the gray area of mixed results.
