LOWELL - U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, who recently slammed Gov. Charlie Baker for saying he wasn't interested in accepting Syrian refugees before he learned about the federal government's screening process, is bringing a 9-year-old Syrian refugee to the State of the Union tonight. Ahmad Alkhalaf, who lost both his arms in a regime airstrike while in a Syrian refugee camp, will be Moulton's guest at President Barack Obama's final State of the Union address.

Since industrial revolution, manufacturing in the United States has long signified innovation, opportunity and a strong middle class. Today, our nation’s manufacturing sector provides an estimated 18 million jobs, accounts for roughly 12 percent of GDP and provides a mean annual income of roughly $75,000 per worker, nearly $15,000 higher than average wages in other industries.
Congressman Moulton's Strategic Vision
- ISIS (the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) is a national security threat to the United States and we must have a serious, comprehensive, long-term strategy to defeat ISIS.
- Underlying this strategy must be a political and diplomatic plan to ensure the peace, so that we don't find ourselves sending troops back to the Middle East yet again after we defeat ISIS militarily; we defeated Al Qaeda in Iraq militarily in 2009, but failed to ensure the success of Iraqi politics, which created a political vacuum ISIS has now filled.

ISIS WANTS to murder more Americans, and it hopes to attack us here at home. Its threats in the aftermath of the Paris carnage made that clear. The question now is how we protect ourselves and, ultimately, defeat this brutal and sophisticated terrorist organization.
Our refugee policy has important implications for our strategy. The congressional furor over accepting Syrian refugees is handing ISIS a propaganda victory while distracting attention from their most likely avenue of attack.
"The Paris attacks underscore the need to defeat - not just contain – ISIS. Yet shutting the door on Syrian refugees who are fleeing the very terrorists we’re fighting is inconsistent with our values and will not help us defeat ISIS.
