In Letter to European Commission, Massachusetts leaders advocate for fact-based decision on potential EU lobster ban

Washington, D.C. – Today, Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton and Senator Edward J. Markey led a campaign to protect the Massachusetts lobster industry. Their advocacy is in response to the European Union (EU) Scientific Forum’s decision to move forward with Sweden’s proposal to classify the American lobster as an invasive alien species and, subsequently, ban their import to the EU.

Almost every senator and representative from Massachusetts voted to override the president’s veto on the Sept. 11 bill today — save for two.

The bill, which Congress passed in an override to President Barack Obama’s veto, would allow families of Sept. 11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia for its alleged backing of the attackers. Obama and top national security officials warned that flaws in the bill could put US interests, troops, and intelligence personnel at risk.

In his continuing opposition to the Obama administration’s Iraq policy, U.S. Rep Seth Moulton is against the president’s latest move to deploy 600 American troops to Iraq.

“We cannot, in good conscience, continue to send young Americans into harm’s way without a clear plan,” said the Massachusetts Democrat in a statement.

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said the troops will assist local security forces as they prepare to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from ISIS.

BOSTON — Rep. Seth Moulton thinks marijuana should be legalized and regulated in Massachusetts, arguing that the state could get a much-needed windfall in tax revenue while driving down black-market pot sales.

Moulton, who acknowledges trying pot as a student at Harvard College in the 1990s, said opponents have “legitimate concerns” about people driving under the influence of marijuana and kids using the drug. Regulation, he said, is the way to address those concerns.

ERBIL, Iraq - The northern Iraqi village of Bashir has been all but flattened by war. Abandoned houses lie in heaps of rubble along the eerily quiet streets. Upon first glance, the village appears uninhabited, but every now and then a solemn-looking child will appear in a doorway. Down one dusty alley, a teenage boy plays with a live electrical wire, causing showers of sparks to dance across the ground.
