Newsletter: Standing Against Harmful Medicaid Cuts
Dear Friends,
Last night I casted my vote against the Republican budget plan, which could cut as much as $880 billion from Medicaid over the next decade in order to give $4.5 trillion in tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest Americans most.
I's safe to say, this budget is a non-starter. While I agree that we need to get the debt under control, taking an axe to such critical programs like Medicaid, which covers 1 in 3 children in Massachusetts, to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy is inexcusable. This plan also threatens the 97,000 people in the 6th District who count on SNAP to put food on the table.
Yesterday afternoon, Democrats stood united on the Capitol steps to oppose the Republican budget proposal, and we will continue to oppose this plan moving forward.
But this fight isn't over - we need to remain vigilant. We must stop these reckless cuts, protect critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP, and hold Republicans accountable for putting the needs of the wealthiest over hardworking Americans.
When I met with leaders from the North Shore and Lynn Community Health Centers last week, what I heard were grave concerns about how cuts to Medicaid would harm the community and add strain on already burdened systems. Community Health Centers serve more than 31 million people across the country, and their ability to meet the needs of low-income Americans is under attack. I was proud to secure $1 million in federal funding in 2022 for Lynn Community Health Center to develop its pharmacy, and last year, I was thrilled to announce a $600,000 federal grant to allow it to treat more patients with mental health and substance use conditions.
