Retired Marine general James Mattis was my division commander in the Marines, and the first time I heard him speak was in the windswept Kuwaiti desert on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. Standing atop his Humvee, he told us how he planned to duct tape Saddam Hussein to the front of the truck when we got to Baghdad and drive around the city — and we eager young Marines roared with approval.

The Democratic Party is in its worst governing position in a generation. Next year we will control just 31 state legislative chambers and 15 governorships. We lost the House of Representatives in 2010, the Senate in 2014, and now the presidency. Clearly the American people are not satisfied with the vision and leadership our party is offering. It’s time to make some serious changes to both.

Boston cannot compete in the global economy when its trains are on fire, like what happened on the MBTA’s Orange Line last week. Our transportation system is in crisis, and no one wants the chaos and cost overruns of another Big Dig to fix it. As a new advocate for the North-South Rail Link, I now understand why this project would deliver the biggest relief to commuters — and why it is not another Big Dig.

Losing a friend in war is always hard. Losing a friend to a battle we already fought and won is worse.

That’s how my close friend Lt.?Col. Ehab Hashem Moshen was killed recently by the Islamic State near Fallujah — refighting a battle in Iraq that the Marine Corps fought a decade ago. The Marines won that fight. The problem is that the Obama administration didn’t follow through on a political plan to maintain the peace.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those in Orlando.” — Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.)

It’s a hollow tradition following each mass shooting, and it has become routine: President Obama gives a speech, reminding us that living this way is a choice. The NRA releases a statement bemoaning the lack of guns at the shooting. And Congress sends their thoughts and prayers.

But the victims’ families don’t want our thoughts and prayers. They want our action, preferably before their loved ones are needlessly massacred.

Since industrial revolution, manufacturing in the United States has long signified innovation, opportunity and a strong middle class. Today, our nation’s manufacturing sector provides an estimated 18 million jobs, accounts for roughly 12 percent of GDP and provides a mean annual income of roughly $75,000 per worker, nearly $15,000 higher than average wages in other industries.

ISIS WANTS to murder more Americans, and it hopes to attack us here at home. Its threats in the aftermath of the Paris carnage made that clear. The question now is how we protect ourselves and, ultimately, defeat this brutal and sophisticated terrorist organization.

Our refugee policy has important implications for our strategy. The congressional furor over accepting Syrian refugees is handing ISIS a propaganda victory while distracting attention from their most likely avenue of attack.

The following piece appeared in the Salem Daily News on May 24th.

Every time I returned to Iraq, it was worse than when I had last left, yet I was proud to serve four tours as a Marine because I never wanted anyone to go in my place. That doesn’t make me a hero; it just makes me a typical American veteran. I served with some of the best Americans I will ever meet: men and women who willingly and selflessly put their lives on the line for a better Iraq and a safer America.
