Congressional App Challenge

Every year the House hosts the Congressional App Challenge, a competition designed to encourage students to learn how to code and explore STEM and computer science through hands-on practice. Officially launched by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2015, this nationwide effort allows students to compete against their peers by creating an application or "app," for desktop/PC, web, tablet, mobile, or other devices. The Challenge is designed to promote innovation and engagement in computer science.

The Congressional App Challenge is open to all middle and high school students in the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts. The winner, chosen by a panel of expert judges, will be featured on CongressionalAppChallenge.us and will also be eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol among other winners from across the country.

Students should submit their app by 12pm November 1, 2023 at congressionalappchallenge.us.

Note: Applications for 2023 are now closed.

The Rules:

  • Students must be in middle or high school at the time of app submission.
  • Students may not participate after having graduated from high school.
  • A student may only compete once per year, in one district.
  • Students may compete in either the district in which they attend school or the district where they reside.
  • Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four.
  • If competing as a team, at least two of the teammates must be eligible to compete within the district in which they are submitting.
  • There are no limits on application theme or topic.
  • Students can use any programming language they want (example: C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, “block code”, etc).
  • Students may use any platform (PC, web, tablet, robot, mobile, etc.)
