Newsletter: Public Servants Deserve the Student Loan Relief They Earned

June 4, 2026

Dear Friends,

If you’ve dedicated your career to public service, you shouldn’t have to fight through excessive loopholes just to get the student loan relief you earned.

That’s why I recently sent a letter to the Department of Education demanding answers about major delays in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Buyback program. Right now, borrowers are waiting anywhere from 6 to 12 months for applications that were supposed to be processed within 45 business days.

My office is helping constituents across the district who have been stuck in limbo for months. Some have continued making payments while interest piles up, all without clear guidance from the federal government about when—or if—their applications will finally be processed.

We’re talking about teachers, nurses, social workers, nonprofit leaders, and public servants who followed the rules, made their payments, and planned their futures around promises the government made to them. Washington needs to uphold its end of the bargain. We cannot abandon them here.

In the letter, I called on the Department of Education to update the status of the backlog, expedite processing times, and clarify whether borrowers waiting on approval will be reimbursed for excess payments they were forced to make. I’ll keep pushing for transparency and accountability to make sure our public servants get the relief they deserve.

If you need help navigating issues with federal student loan programs, such as the PSLF program, my office is here to help. Please call us at (978) 531-1669.

Sincerely,

Congressman Seth Moulton
