Newsletter: Defending Social Security

March 7, 2025

Dear Friends,

Donald Trump promised he wouldn’t cut Social Security, but the Associated Press is reporting that the Administration plans to cut its workforce by up to 50%!

I continue to believe that our government needs to be modernized so that it better serves every American. But knee-capping the Social Security Administration is not the way to do it. In fact, what Elon is doing will only make the Social Security system less efficient – and Americans will pay the price. I’ve heard from many constituents worried about their next SSA check.

I’m proud to announce the introduction of the Beneficiary Data Protection Act, which would prevent political appointees like Elon Musk and unauthorized individuals from accessing sensitive Social Security data systems. It would also codify SSA data privacy requirements into law, and strengthen oversight and civil penalties for any privacy and disclosure violations of Social Security beneficiaries’ personal information.

DOGE’s handpicked Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Leland Dudek, confirmed that DOGE personnel have access to beneficiary information. This action is so alarming that the previous Acting Commissioner stepped down rather than grant them access to their databases. The American people deserve to have their private information kept confidential.

This week, I also joined over 150 Democratic colleagues to demand that Acting Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Leland Dudek stop the Trump-Musk administration’s attempts to dismantle Social Security. I am also part of the New Dems Coalition, which has teamed up with the Progressive Caucus to oppose cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. I will continue to fight for what SSA recipients EARNED.

Trump has repeatedly broken promises to the American people. We all must continue to hold him accountable.
