Moulton Statement on SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Bump Stock Ban
Congressman Seth Moulton issued the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a rule that banned bump stocks.
In 2017, a man armed with bump stock-equipped semi-automatic rifles shot over 1,000 rounds into a Las Vegas concert crowd, killing 58 people and wounding at least 413 in just a few minutes.
Today, the Supreme Court decided to strike down a ban on bump stocks. An outcome so extreme that it even goes against a Trump administration policy to curb their use.
There is no tactical reason for a civilian to need a bump stock. Having used assault rifles in Iraq, I know that firsthand. But bump stocks are only useful if the goal is to indiscriminately kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
Two weeks after the Las Vegas shooting, my colleague Rep. Curbelo—a Florida Republican—and I even introduced a bipartisan bill to ban bump stocks. At the time, that bill gained a lot of momentum, with both Republicans and Democrats in agreement that this ban was essential to public safety.
There is no question that Congress can and must act on this. There is another good proposal active now, the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act (H.R. 396), which the Speaker should muster the political courage to bring to the floor for a vote immediately.
Trump created this radical Court, and now it has become so extremist that it’s even overturning Trump’s own policies.
