Moulton Statement on Saudi Arabia Deployment

October 11, 2019
WASHINGTON—Following the Secretary of Defense’s decision today to authorize the deployment of additional U.S. forces to Saudi Arabia, bringing the total number of U.S. forces to 3,000, Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) made the following statement:

“The Trump Doctrine is now unmistakably clear: under this commander in chief, America does the bidding of the world’s dictators at the expense of our allies and values,” Moulton said. “Yesterday Trump said that he wants to ‘end endless wars,’ but today he is deploying fighter squadrons, 1,800 troops, and missile defense batteries to be used as pawns in a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The president is needlessly risking American lives in Saudi Arabia for no concrete goal and withdrawing them from Syria where the goal was clear: protect America and our allies by stopping ISIS.”

Background

Just as the President announced an “end to endless wars” in Northern Syria, the Department of Defense confirmed that since May the number of U.S. troops in the Middle East has increased by 14,000.

Moulton has been an outspoken critic of the decision to abandon our Kurdish allies in Syria. He published an op-ed on the president’s decision to withdraw forces from Syria earlier this week.
