Moulton Statement on President's Syria Declaration

WASHINGTON---Today, the President addressed the nation in an attempt to rebrand the Trump Doctrine. He announced that the U.S. would lift sanctions on Turkey in return for Turkey’s commitment to a permanent ceasefire in Syria. The president said, “let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand,” and that, “now Turkey, Syria and others in their region must work to insure that ISIS does not regain any territory. It’s their neighborhood. They have to maintain it.”

Following the speech, Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) made the following statement:

“The Trump Doctrine, which the president so desperately tried to rewrite today, paves the way for the spilling of more American blood, not less. In the end, the president’s actions, not his words will define him. His spinelessness with regard to Turkey gives Russia and Iran the room they need to expand their toxic influence in the world,” Moulton said. “No amount of posturing behind the presidential podium will rewrite the history of the last few weeks, and the fact that the president thinks it will, shows that he’s fundamentally unfit for duty as our commander in chief. Fortunately, Americans are smarter than Trump thinks: just like Erdogan, Putin, Rouhani, Kim, and Assad, all of us can see right through him, too.”
