Moulton Statement on the Ongoing United Auto Workers Strike

September 18, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Moulton issued the following statement in reaction to the ongoing United Auto Workers strike:

“In recent years the “Big Three” auto makers have been taking home strong and steady profits. The CEO of GM is paid 362 times more than the median worker at GM. While CEO wages have steadily increased, worker pay has fallen. Workers are clearly not getting the cost of living increases that they deserve, especially when factoring in inflation.

"The automakers only created work tiers to alleviate the impacts of the 2008 recession. While this approach may have been needed then, it means that workers are now effectively stuck in a rigid pay system, where different tiers of workers are paid different amounts of money for doing the same work. It’s time to reevaluate this outdated and irrelevant practice.

“Chinese electric vehicles are the biggest competitive threat on the horizon, and to remain competitive, U.S. automakers must adapt to new economics while retaining the high-quality workforce that makes our unions proud. Good pay for quality work should be the baseline expectation for everyone, and high-paid executives must uphold their end of the bargain.”
