Moulton Statement on the Killing of Qasem Soleimani

January 2, 2020

SALEM, Mass. — Following reports that Qasem Soleimani has been killed, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) issued the following statement:

Qasem Soleimani was an enemy of the United States with American blood on his hands. But the question we've grappled with for years in Iraq was how to kill more terrorists than we create. That’s an open question tonight as we await Iran’s reaction to Donald Trump’s escalation, which could ignite a regional war, with still no strategy from the Administration. Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign and shredding of the Iran Nuclear Deal has so far succeeded in increasing Iranian attacks on the US and our allies, led Iran to restart its nuclear program, and further empowered hardliners in the Iranian government—on every count, the precise opposite of what we need and what the Administration itself says it is trying to achieve. Yet again tonight, the Administration needs to explain to Congress what the strategy is and what happens next. Our troops and the American people deserve nothing less.
