Moulton Statement on the Coup in Burma
WASHINGTON— Following reports that Burma’s military has staged a coup and detained the country’s senior leaders including Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, Rep. Seth Moulton released the following statement:
The people of Burma have spoken through the democratic process, and they have reelected Aung San Suu Kyi’s government.
I join U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s call on Burma’s military leaders to release all government officials and civil society leaders.
I also call on all involved parties to respect and protect human rights of all ethnic and religious groups within Burma, and defend against any potential violence or other activities that would further destabilize the situation.
I will continue to monitor the situation closely in support of democratic systems and values in Burma.
