Moulton Statement on Bipartisan Immigration Reform Talks Faltering
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Moulton made the following statement in reaction to reports that negotiations for an immigration deal are in jeopardy due to political pressure:
“Republicans have yet again allowed politics to hijack an urgent crisis. For months, the situation at the border has worsened, and emergency shelters have been strained. Yet it seems that now the GOP is all but ready to give up on a chance at bipartisan reform just to satisfy the whims of Donald Trump.
Democrats want to work across the aisle on actual solutions to ensure everyone who enters the country does so legally; to stop fentanyl and other drugs from coming through the border; to reform our broken asylum system; and to create an orderly process by which people can work, pay taxes, and become citizens as they have for centuries.
While Republicans bow down to Trump, Governor Healey and many other governors from red and blue states are left pleading with Washington for federal resources to help alleviate the extreme strain on emergency shelters across the country. To be clear, these are resources that the President has already proposed as part of a broader funding package that is being held up by these failing negotiations.
Republicans in the House and Senate must drop the political brinkmanship and work with us to solve the problem.”
