Moulton Statement on the Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Protests

June 4, 2020

WASHINGTON — Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) released the following statement in observance of the June 4, 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square:

“As we remember the Tiananmen Square massacre’s anniversary today, our observance comes at an important time both at home and in China. Let it remind people around the world that in our darkest hours and under even the most repressive regimes, people always choose freedom and self-government over tyranny.

The voices of the marchers that day in 1989 are echoing today in Hong Kong, where free people are pushing back on the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on the fundamental rights of free speech and free assembly, justice under the law, and public accountability among leaders.

They echo as well in Minneapolis and across our country where Americans are marching for change. We heard that same yearning for freedom in Washington this week, roaring above the choking coughs and terrified screams of Americans tear-gassed by their own president and beaten by their own police so that Trump could pretend to value the Bible in front of a church.

The people who rose up in 1989 surely felt some confidence in knowing that America and other free nations would support their movement. So today, let’s make sure that America still stands for our founding principles, both at home and around the globe. May our country—and its leaders—always set a proud example of fighting to expand justice and freedom for all.”
