Moulton Joins Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act as Original Cosponsor
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06) joined the Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act as an original cosponsor, reaffirming support for protecting access to medication abortion and defending the authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate safe and effective medications based on science, not politics.
Congressman Moulton previously cosponsored this legislation in the 118th and 117th sessions of Congress.
The Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act would reaffirm the FDA’s longstanding approval of mifepristone, a medication that has been safely used for more than 25 years, and protect healthcare providers’ ability to prescribe medication abortion through telehealth and dispense the medication by mail.
The legislation comes amid ongoing legal challenges to mifepristone that threaten to restrict access nationwide. A recent federal circuit court ruling attempted to reinstate in-person dispensing requirements for the medication, though the Supreme Court temporarily blocked that decision while litigation continues.
Originally introduced in the 117th Congress, the Protecting Reproductive Freedom Act affirms that:
- Medication abortion is appropriately approved and regulated by the FDA based on scientific evidence.
- States should not be permitted to impose in-person dispensing requirements for medication abortion.
- States should not restrict prescribing or dispensing medication abortion through telehealth.
