Moulton Introduces The FAIR Justice Act, Legislation To Prohibit Politically-Motivated Prosecutions and Investigations
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Seth Moulton (MA‑06) today introduced the FAIR Justice Act, H.R. 7072, legislation to prohibit politically-motivated prosecutions and investigations.
“Using the justice system to punish your political opponents reeks of authoritarianism and has no place in our democracy,” said Congressman Moulton. “For most of our history, our nation’s presidents have understood that—until Donald Trump came along. It should alarm everyone that we are at a point in our nation where such a bill needs to be introduced, but Trump’s actions in recent weeks have underscored the urgent need for such legislation.”
H.R. 7072 would set clear guardrails to ensure that any President, Vice President, employee of the Eexecutive Ooffice of the President, or Cabinet Secretary (other than the Attorney General) cannot request that the Department of Justice conduct a criminal prosecution or other investigation of any particular individual, if the request is selectively made solely for a political purpose.
The introduction of this bill comes on the heels of the Trump Administration’s decision to investigate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey based on frivolous charges with no basis in fact.
