Moulton Follow-Up Statement on ICJ's Israel-Gaza Case

January 27, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) issued the following response to the preliminary ruling from the International Court of Justice:

"While I do not support South Africa’s case alleging that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, I agree with this core principle, which the ICJ highlighted in its interim ruling: Israel must do everything it can to prevent the mass killing of innocent civilians in this conflict.

I have been saying for months that Israeli leaders must take decisive action to avoid civilian casualties, to stop taking provocative steps like calling for settlements and occupation, and to radically increase the amount of humanitarian aid going into Gaza.

I will continue to push publicly and privately for Israel to take the necessary steps to minimize civilian deaths and boost much-needed humanitarian aid. In the meantime I support the negotiations for a hostage release in exchange for a multi-week pause in fighting.

At the same time, we must recognize that Hamas is a terrorist organization that committed atrocities on October 7th and still holds dozens of hostages. Its continued existence is a threat to Gazans and Israelis alike.

At the end of the day, a two-state solution is the only viable path to long-term peace. Anyone who is against a two-state solution should not be in a position of leadership in Israel or Gaza."
