Moulton Defends Intellectual Freedom During Banned Books Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In recognition of Banned Books Week, Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06) is a proud original cosponsor of a resolution affirming every American’s fundamental freedom to read and condemning the Trump Administration’s escalating efforts to censor books in schools, universities, and libraries across the country.
This resolution denounces the growing wave of book bans that disproportionately target stories featuring LGBTQ+ characters, discussions of racism, and the complex histories of discrimination and diverse communities. These bans have led to the removal of award-winning, historically significant literature from school curricula—including Anne Frank’s Diary and To Kill a Mockingbird.
“Book bans have no place in our democracy,” said Congressman Moulton. “Denying access to literature, history, and knowledge is a tactic used by authoritarian regimes to control the narrative and limit freedom. It’s not only dangerous—it’s fundamentally anti-American.”
Banned Books Week is a national celebration of the freedom to read and a call to action against rising censorship. This week, lawmakers, educators, and advocates across the country are standing up for intellectual freedom and against the suppression of ideas and knowledge.
