Moulton Commemorates Memorial Day
“The veterans and heroes that we remember today put serving their country - their countrymen, and our future - before themselves”
Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) released the following statement to commemorate Memorial Day:
“Memorial Day is about honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I believe the best way to honor our fallen heroes is to learn from them.
“In Iraq I served with some of the best Americans I will ever meet. Men and women who selflessly put their lives on the line for a better Iraq and safer America. All gave some and some gave all.
“As I travel through Southeast Asia – specifically Vietnam and Korea - I can’t help but reflect on the brave men and women who sacrificed everything here on behalf of our freedom. And we would be remiss if we did not pause to acknowledge the men and women we have lost in our current conflicts abroad. We have lost over 6,700 American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, including over 130 from here in Massachusetts. Today we thank them for their service to our country; we remember the lives they lived by sharing their stories; and, we miss them
“The veterans and heroes that we remember today put serving their country - their countrymen, and our future - before themselves. They gave that last full measure of devotion so that we could have the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today.
“Each Memorial Day I am reminded of my favorite quote which is inscribed at the top of the wall of the WWI memorial at Memorial Church, where I spent many hours during my time at college. It reads:
‘While a bright future beckoned
they freely gave their lives and fondest hopes
for us and our allies
that we might learn from them courage
in peace to spend
our lives making a better world for others’
“Today and over this Memorial Day weekend, let’s honor those lost. Let’s share those stories and the lessons we’ve learned from them, but let’s also follow in their footsteps by committing to make our country and our world better for the next generation.”
