Moulton Announces Department of Energy Grant for Beverly-based startup Nth Cycle

September 12, 2023

SALEM, MA — Congressman Seth Moulton has announced that Nth Cycle, a metal refinery based in the 6th District, has been awarded $3 million by the Department of Energy to advance its cutting edge work on creating a greener, more sustainable critical mineral supply chain.

Nth Cycle, which is headquartered in Beverly, uses innovative new technologies that utilize electricity and water to more efficiently refine crude minerals and scrap metals, lowering emissions in the process.

"The Sixth District is home to some of the world’s most cutting edge companies whose work today is preparing us for the future. Nth Cycle is one of those companies. Producing batteries in a cleaner and more sustainable way is increasingly important for the environment, the economy, and for America’s supply chain security," said Congressman Moulton. "I’m thrilled that Nth Cycle will receive this funding to help support the innovative work they are undertaking to create a greener economic future for everyone."

"Our refining technology will play a pivotal role in establishing a clean, closed-loop, and continuous supply of domestic critical metals for the United States" said Dr. Megan O’Connor, co-founder and CEO of Nth Cycle. "Thanks to the efforts of the DOE, Congressman Moulton, and the Massachusetts delegation, we can accelerate those efforts."

The grant is part of a larger pool of $61 million distributed by the Department of Energy to a number of projects across the country that advance greener clean manufacturing processes.

Nth Cycle also received a $2.15 million grant as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law last year. Congressman Moulton toured the Beverly facilities last December.
