Moulton Announces $5 Million Worth of FEMA Grants for Fire Departments in 6th Congressional District
SALEM, Mass. – Today, Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) announced that several fire departments in the North Shore and Merrimack Valley received a total of $5,314,919 million worth of grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Rep. Moulton said: “These FEMA grants bring us steps closer to helping our fire departments and first responders get the proper gear, equipment, training and personnel they need to safely and effectively protect and serve our communities. I am proud to have played a role in securing this funding, and I look forward to continuing my efforts to advocate for local departments in the Sixth District.”
The grants delivered to Massachusetts’ Sixth District are broken down into two types. Congress funds the grants through its annual appropriations process and FEMA administers them.
Here’s a list of the local grants:
Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG):
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations. This type of grant helps firefighters and other first responders obtain critically-needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fires and related hazards.
Massachusetts’ Sixth District was awarded $2,205,371 worth of AFG funding. The following departments received the grants:

Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant:
Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grants were created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations so they can increase or maintain the number of trained, frontline firefighters available in their communities. This grant will help local fire departments' in the Sixth District comply with staffing, response, and operational standards.
Massachusetts’ Sixth District was awarded $3,109,548 worth of SAFER funding.
