Congressman Moulton Statement on the Arrest of Former President Donald Trump

April 4, 2023

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) released the following statement in response to the arrest and arraignment of former President Donald Trump:

“This is a sad, and frankly embarrassing, day for America.

Donald Trump, one of only forty-four others who have held the highest office in the land, has spent his entire career flaunting the law, both literally and figuratively, and the list of his friends, supporters, and former staff who have explained this over the years is remarkably long.

Specifically, he’s violated campaign finance laws before. Americans have every right and expectation that politicians will be held accountable to the law because they are, too. That’s the fundamental point that no amount of politicking or excuse-making can take away: in America, the law applies to everyone.

This is also not a moment to gloat. Donald Trump is actively running for president again. It is important for Americans of all political stripes—Democrats, courageous Republicans, and sensible Independents—to ensure he doesn’t get elected again. I hope all the Republicans who tell the truth about Trump in private, from Tucker Carlson to many of my colleagues in Congress, will have the courage and basic decency to tell these truths in public.

At a time when the country should be moving on from the deep damage and division the Trump presidency caused, it is unfortunate that we’re still dealing with his daily rants.

It’s on a day like today that the words of John Adams, carved into the White House state dining room are as meaningful as ever: ‘may none but honest and wise Men ever rule under this roof.’"
