WSAW News: Congressman Pushing to Modernize Federal Employee Travel
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - When it comes to federal employee travel, a Texas lawmaker thinks we’re behind-the-times. He’s pushing legislation to bring Uncle Sam up to speed, and save some money in the process.
"This is an example of how the Federal Government is not keeping pace with the times,” said Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX).
Hurd thinks the government needs to drive into the 21st century when it comes to how it reimburses employee travel. As of now, Hurd said federal employees can only be compensated for cab rides when on official business. He wants to add ride-sharing services to the list.
"It makes sense, and it recognizes the real economy, the new gig economy, that we’re involved in today,” said Hurd.
Hurd said when you take a ride-sharing service, it’s not just more efficient for federal employees, it’s cheaper for the government.
The legislation would cover Uber, lyft, even bike-share systems. Hurd said these options are built on the basis that customers will save money, in turn saving taxpayers money.
"This is a simple fix that we’re able to get support for, to make sure that the men and women that are serving in the federal government have all the tools available for them when they’re traveling,” said Hurd.
He introduced the legislation with Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA). They expect widespread bipartisan support.
