U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton will take part in the 2016 annual Miles for Mary 5K Run and Walk to be held Saturday, October 22. Registration opens at 9 a.m. in the Devereux Beach parking lot, the cost is $30 on race day and the race steps off at 10 a.m. sharp. Come and race your congressman as he hits the ground as part of Team Moulton.

Miles for Mary was established by the Park family in memory of Mary Park who died of brain cancer in 2012. The goal behind the event is to raise awareness of the effects of brain cancer, as well as raise funds to advance research into new treatments "to speed the day when the diagnosis of brain cancer isn’t so dire," said Bill Park, Mary's husband. All proceeds from 5K will benefit brain cancer research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

To date the event has raised $200,000 for brain cancer research and has been recognized by MGH as one of the “one hundred” honorees for their contributions to the fight against cancer.

Those looking to help out can register online until Oct. 20 and the cost will be only $25. Go to www.milesformay.com to register. The race course around the Marblehead Neck has been certified by USA Track and Field. All runners registered by October 14 will receive a t-shirt plus prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners overall and for various age categories.

Miles for Mary is the next race in the 2016 Marblehead Race Series, which includes eight 5K races all run in Marblehead (www.marbleheadraceseries.com), and the first race June. Participants can still qualify for a series hat if they join the remaining five races. There will be prizes for overall winners and for age groups among series participants and to encourage a competitive field again this year, there will also be a $150 cash prize for any runner who sets a new course record, Park said.

The Park family is also hosting a Research Seminar presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Gerstner titled “Innovations in Brain Cancer Research and Treatment” on November 7 at Eastern Yacht Club. More information is available at www.milesformary.com. Donations may also be made online directly to the MGH secure site at https://secure.massgeneral.org/milesformary.
