Wicked Local Ipswich: For Assault-Rifle op-ed, Cong. Seth Moulton Lands on NY Daily News Front Page

A picture of Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Salem, clad in a Boston Red Sox hat and military gear as he holds a high-power assault rifle landed on the New York Daily News’ front page Wednesday.

Above Moulton’s head reads a headline: “Hey, NRA: This Marine served in Iraq & he says assault rifles should be banned. Does that make him a gun-grabbing commie, too?”\

The cover on the New York Daily News, a daily newspaper with a circulation over 500,000, teases anopinion editorial written by Moulton pleading for members of Congress to pass legislation banning assault rifles - such as the one he cradles against his chest in the front-page photo – in civil society. The assault rifle in the photo is similar to the AR-15 assault rifle used to kill 49 people and injure 53 more at an Orlando, Fla. gay nightclub early Sunday morning.

“I trained for years in order to use my weapon properly. And long before I ever aimed it at an individual, I had to look at pictures of dead and mangled bodies in order to understand the magnitude of what it meant to pull that trigger,” writes Moulton. “There’s simply no reason for a civilian to own a military-style assault weapon.”

The New York Daily News placed him on the cover two days after a furious Moulton walked out of a Republican-led moment of silence for the Orlando victims. It was a protest against what he sees as conservative’s routine reaction “instead of holding a vote on gun reform in the wake of another horrific mass shooting.”

“Most in Congress know this. They know that something is wrong in our country when massive murder sprees become routine. They simply lack the political courage to do something about it,” he writes. “So, spare these innocent victims your thoughts and prayers.”
