Letter: Moulton’s actions will help save whales
U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton has again proven his commitment to North Atlantic right whales. After introducing H.R. 1568, the Save Right Whales Act, in March, Rep. Moulton authored a successful amendment to the federal appropriations package, which the House passed on June 25, to secure an additional $1.5 million for conservation of this critically endangered species.
Although abundant at one time, fewer than 420 right whales remain on Earth. Brought close to extinction by whaling, they slowly began to recover. But the species is again declining, due to fatal entanglements in commercial fishing gear and collisions with ships. By funding collaborative projects among states, scientists, commercial fisheries and shippers, Rep. Moulton’s efforts can help reverse this trend.
Both the law and compassion demand that we act to save this majestic species living just off the coast of Massachusetts. I thank Rep. Moulton for his continued leadership on animal protection.
