Eagle Tribune: Moulton Among Democrats Staging Sit-In for Gun Control
Congressman Seth Moulton, D-Salem, Mass., joined other Democrats in a sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday to demand a vote on new gun control measures. Moulton, a four-tour Marine Corps Iraq War veteran, has been outspoken about the lack of action in Congress concerning what he calls common-sense gun reforms. "Inspiring to be with so many Members of Congress at a sit-in on the House Floor demanding action on gun violence," tweeted Moulton around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
He and other congressmen walked out of a moment of silence the day after the massacre of 49 patrons of a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, as a way to show more has to be done than thoughts and prayers, he said at the time.
Carrie Rankin, the 6th District representative's spokeswoman, confirmed Moulton was among dozens of House Democrats participating in the sit-in, started by Georgia Congressman John Lewis, a leader of the civil rights movement.
The 6th District includes Boxford, Georgetown, Groveland, Merrimac, Middleton, North Andover, Salisbury, West Newbury and parts of Andover.
Moulton took to Twitter during the sit-in announcing his support for Lewis. "@repjohnlewis has fought on the right side of history time and again. Proud to be with him today to demand action on reasonable gun reform."\
On social media, Moulton said the least Congress could do was vote on gun reform measures that most Americans support. "Voting on them is our job and the least we can do. #NoBillNoVote," he tweeted to his followers.
It was unclear how long the sit-in might last. Pictures on various news sites showed Lewis and others sitting on the House floor. "Give us a vote! Let us vote! We came here to do our job, we came here to work! The American people are demanding action. #holdthefloor," Lewis tweeted around 3 p.m.
