WOULD THEY meet with the president?

During the presidencies of Gerald Ford or Ronald Reagan or George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush, it would have been an easy question with an obvious answer. But no longer.

When Jim Brett, president and CEO of the New England Council, posed the query to the four New Democrat US representatives pitching their brand of pragmatic, pro-growth politics at a forum in Boston this week, all felt the need to justify their answers.

Which tells you a lot about the state of our politics.

What if President Trump asked them to come to the White House for a meeting on, say, the infrastructure legislation the administration is putting together — would they go? After all, one prominent strain of Democratic thought is that, with an unpopular Republican president mired in quicksand, the best political policy is just to watch and wait.

“Absolutely, I would go and talk to him,” said Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, stressing the importance of infrastructure improvements to this state.
