Moulton Statement on DOJ's Special Counsel Appointment to Oversee Trump Investigation

Washington, D.C.— Congressman Moulton issued the following statement in light of Attorney General Merrick Garland's announcement that he will appoint a Special Counsel to oversee the ongoing investigation into former President Trump:

“No one is above the law. Especially when classified national security information is involved, and especially when the perpetrator is again seeking our country’s highest office.

While the former President may prefer to manage his own affairs outside the bounds of the law, we still live in a democracy where our judicial system is guided by integrity and unbiased processes.

The decision to appoint an independent Special Counsel – especially one with the breadth of knowledge that Jack Smith brings to the table –is the right thing to do. I agree with the Attorney General that this work should be ‘indisputably guided‘ only by the facts and the law.

In the meantime, we should let this investigation play out and follow those facts where they may lead.”
