Moulton Helps MBTA Secure $859 Million in Funding from American Rescue Plan Act
Salem, Mass. — Today, Representative Seth Moulton announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is awarding the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) with $859.6 million worth of critical funding through the American Rescue Plan. Moulton led a bipartisan effort, with the support of 78 other lawmakers, to include transit relief in the federal response to the pandemic.
As communities continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, these funds are intended to help the MBTA maintain service and jobs, while also ensuring that residents who depend on transit are able to get where they need to go.
Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) said: “Throughout the pandemic, the MBTA brought essential workers to their jobs. Today, as more and more people prepare to return to work and the Delta variant threatens our progress, these funds from Congress will help make sure the MBTA can safely get people where they need to go.”
The funding for the MBTA comes from the $26.6 billion in American Rescue Plan funds allocated by statutory formulas to urban and rural areas, tribal governments, and for the enhanced mobility of seniors and individuals with disabilities.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which President Biden signed on March 11, 2021, includes $30.5 billion in federal funding to support the nation’s public transportation systems as they continue to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and support the President’s call to vaccinate the U.S. population. No Republican voted for the American Rescue Plan.
