June 17th, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) weighed in on President Trump’s decision to reverse President Obama’s Cuba policies.

Key Point:
“If you believe in the values represented by this flag, then you should want to share them to create more allies around the globe. That’s what we’ve done with Vietnam, that’s what President Obama began to do with Cuba, and President Trump is setting us back. That’s bad for America, bad for our economy, bad for our tourists, and bad for the Cuban people. And most of all, it’s bad for democracy.”

Full Transcript:
“President Trump just announced that he is reversing the tremendous progress President Obama began in improving U.S. – Cuba relations. I visited Cuba last year, and it’s extraordinary how much progress the Cuban people have just recently made under this opening with the United States. They have relatively unfettered access to the internet, they have access to American cell phones now, they can communicate with the rest of the world, and the private sector economy in Cuba is flourishing – moving the state away from the communist-style government and state-run economy that has plagued it for the last several decades. That kind of progress is possible with an opening. The embargo against Cuba never achieved those aims.

“I saw that same progress in Vietnam, another communist country that America opened to in 1995. We now do billions of dollars of trade with Vietnam. Vietnam is moving towards a private sector economy, and the national assembly now has a say in the governance of the country. Protests are even happening in Vietnam’s streets – that’s what you can achieve with an opening to America, with an opening to our values.
