VIDEO – Moulton: “We in Congress are going to fight for what’s right”

June 13th, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Upon returning from an Armed Services Committee Congressional delegation to Southeast Asia, Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) sat down to discuss his experience for a NowThis Op-ed. In his interview, Moulton talked about the national security threat climate change poses and the obligation Congress has to hold the administration accountable and defend American values.

Key Point:
“But one of the things we emphasized – and we emphasized this Republicans and Democrats alike – is that Congress is a separate, co-equal branch of government. That’s just a polite way of saying the president does not speak for all of us, does not even speak for the entire administration, let alone the entire United States government or all of our people. So the message was: America knows that we have to uphold our international agreements like our commitment to NATO and our commitment to Paris. And so even while the president is doing things that put our national security in danger, we in Congress are going to fight for what’s right.”

Full Transcript:
“Our first stop on this [Congressional delegation to Asia] was Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. We went through the various threats in the Pacific theatre, to our troops and to our allies, especially North Korea, and then, unprompted, the American commander brought up the threat he sees from climate change.

“He says, ‘look, it doesn’t matter that some people are denying this is happening. It is happening and I have to deal with the national security threat that climate change poses to our nation. As the arctic ice melts, new seal lanes are opening up and the Russians are taking advantage of that. They are purchasing a lot of ice breakers, they are getting into our shores, and it’s yet another national security threat to our nation.’

“Everywhere we went [in Asia] our allies talked about the anxiety they feel with America right now. The uncertain leadership, the abrogation of leadership. The number of foreign leaders who complained about us pulling out of [the Paris climate accord] was frankly embarrassing.

“But one of the things we emphasized – and we emphasized this Republicans and Democrats alike – is that Congress is a separate, co-equal branch of government. That’s just a polite way of saying the president does not speak for all of us, does not even speak for the entire administration, let alone the entire United States government or all of our people.

“So the message was: America knows that we have to uphold our international agreements like our commitment to NATO and our commitment to Paris. And so even while the president is doing things that put our national security in danger, we in Congress are going to fight for what’s right.”
