Moulton Statement on Executive Order Calling for the Dismantling of the Education Department
Salem, Mass. -- Congressman Moulton issued the following statement on President Trump's Executive Order calling for the dismantling of the Education Department:
"What Trump is doing is illegal. Trump brags about his “very good brain,” but it doesn’t take a genius to know that education is fundamental to success.
The Department of Education was created by Congress almost 50 years ago to coordinate federal support for schools. “Dismantling” it will mean more chaos for families trying to figure out how to pay for college, schools scrambling to cover budget gaps, and worse outcomes for students at a time when we’re still facing setbacks from COVID.
Despite what the White House may say, the Dept of Ed is not setting some "woke" agenda. Instead, its staff review college financial aid forms, distribute grants to elementary schools, and track student learning outcomes. We should all be invested in improving our education system, but I find it impossible to believe this is a good faith effort to do that. The farther kids fall behind, the less prosperous we’ll be as a country."
